GITEX 2017 – 5 key highlights
16/10/2017

The recently concluded GITEX once again proved why it’s considered the biggest technology exhibition in the Middle East.  Brands showcased their inventions using latest technologies – be it consumer facing or as enterprise solutions.  Below are just 5 highlights (among many that are equally noteworthy) that showcase UAE’s push towards a technology driven future.

LG – leader in digital signage:  After setting the world record for biggest OLED screen at The Dubai Mall, LG unveiled digital signage trends report “See the Signs” at GITEX.  Based on feedback from business leaders in the region, this report quotes a unanimous view that digital signage will have enormous impact over static ones in the lead up to Expo 2020 in UAE.  The highest growth will come from the retail sector.   LG also introduced their ‘Wallpaper’ Hotel TV – a unique razor-thin OLED display that becomes one with the wall, targeting the growing luxury hotel market.

Etisalat – the fastest 5G:  Another world record was set – by Etisalat for the fastest 5G live trial reaching 71Gbps.  5G will be deployed by 2020 giving unprecedented technology advantages to companies and consumers.  5G is expected to shape UAE for the growing ‘Internet of Things’ demands and a ‘smart lifestyle’ because it’s about connecting ‘things’ and not just people.

Flying-taxi – star of the show:  RTA showcased their Autonomous Air Taxi (AAT) but clarified it will take another 5 years for it to be operational.  RTA also announced a series of other ‘smart’ services including a smart pedestrian crossing signal, a driving app and a loyalty points system for the metro card system nol.  RTA introduced S’hail app,  a mobility app designed for the ‘smart travel’ connecting all modes of transportation including drone taxis when they become operational.

‘Futuristic’ vision from Dubai Police:  Dubai Police introduced many services incorporating latest technologies.  ‘Hoversurf’ – a cross between a drone and a motorcycle can seat one police officer and be controlled remotely.  This is believed to help the officers especially in crime-fighting.  They also showcased a self-driving police car and the country’s first Robocop armed with cameras capable of live-streaming to the police control center.  These steps are taken to provide a ‘smart and safe’ future for UAE.

GITEX Future Stars:  Named as Middle East’s largest startup confluence of global tech entrepreneurs, international investors and influential corporate buyers.  With MENA reporting a 260% Y-o-Y increase in investments in startups in 2016, this event aims to help innovators turn their ideas into reality.  With an impressive list of sponsors and collaborators like Wamda this year, GITEX Future Stars will be an annual milestone event for the startup community in the region.  The registration for 2018 edition is already open.
